In the two decades after World War II, Black Americans and their white allies marched for equality and against injustice in the American South.  While the work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. in leading this crusade is well known, women of both races played crucial roles in the civil rights movement.  Black women activists such as Jo Ann Robinson, Sadie T. Alexander, Rosa Parks, Daisy Bates, Diane Nash, and Barbara Jordan, and their white allies, particularly Eleanor Roosevelt and Dorothy Rogers Tilly assumed key leadership and organizing positions within the movement.  From the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955 to the passage of the Voting Rights Act of 1965, the successes of the civil rights movement resulted from deep partnerships across racial and gender lines.

本期活动的主讲人是David Goldfield博士，他会通过视频连线的方式现身上海美国中心。Goldfield博士是美国历史学家、作家、电影导演，也是北卡罗来纳大学夏洛特分校的教授。 他著有16本书，其中两本获得了普利策奖提名。他在美国政治史和美国民权运动方面的专业知识会帮助观众更好地理解妇女在美国民权运动中扮演的角色。

Join Dr. David Goldfield, appearing at the Shanghai American Center virtually from the United States.  Dr. Goldfield is an American historian, writer, film director, and professor at the university of North Carolina at Charlotte.  He is the author of 16 books, two of which were nominated for Pulitzer Prizes.  His expertise in American political history and the American Civil Right movement will give us an informed understanding of the role women played in the Civil Rights movement and how the fight for civil rights changed women’s lives.

During this time, the audience must wear masks, maintain social distancing requirements, take temperature test and show a Shanghai health code before entering the Shanghai American Center. Please be sure to RSVP if you intend to come.  Programs begin on time and seats are subject to space availability. If the room is full when you arrive, you might not be granted entry, even if you RSVP'd. We can only seat the first 60 guests at this time.

Doors will open and security screening will commence 15 minutes before the program starts. You must bring a valid physical photo ID in order to enter the Shanghai American Center (ShAC). Copies or pictures of IDs will not be accepted.

All belongings carried into the ShAC will be scanned during security screening. While guests may not bring laptop computers to Shanghai American Center programs, portable electronic devices, such as mobile phones, iPads and other tablets, and smartwatches are permitted.
