This program will be conducted in Chinese and English. The film will be in Chinese and English with Chinese subtitles.

What happens when 300 lesbians from around the world attend the largest United Nations NGO conference? How did two busloads of lesbians headed to an underground nightclub help spark the birth of a “lala” (lesbian) movement in China? Did you want to learn the story of how the first ever lesbian tent at a United Nations Forum was created at the 1995 World Conference on Women in Beijing?

In celebration of Pride Month, please join us at the Beijing American Center for a movie screening and discussion of “We Are Here,” a documentary about the historic movement to include sexual orientation as a protected right under the United Nations Platform for Women. The film’s director will introduce and discuss the film, which documents how feminist leaders fought to make the issue of women’s sexual orientation visible on the global stage for the first time. The film also tells the story of today’s young feminist lalas, and how they have challenged sexism and homophobia.

This program is not suitable for children under 6.
